Use group chat when fast, informal conversation is the main need. Consider a structured community platform when announcements, decisions, events, files, roles, and moderation must remain distinct and findable.
Short answer: neither category is automatically better. Chat tools are strong at immediate conversation and may already be familiar to members. A structured community platform is useful when the group needs several governed workflows, a durable shared context, or clearer boundaries between conversation, decisions, and administration.

This may suit groups that prioritize mobile familiarity and already organize through WhatsApp groups. Test whether the documented group structure provides the records, permissions, and workflows your community needs.
When Discord may suit the group
Discord documents an optional Community Server configuration, forum channels for topic-based posts, and scheduled events. This may suit communities comfortable with a server-and-channel model that want a mix of live conversation and topic spaces. Availability depends on configuration, permissions, and current Discord requirements.
